Excellence belongs to those who pursue it.
A community of growers, winemakers, and enthusiasts
dedicated to advancing winegrowing in the Sierra Foothills.
The Sierra Winegrape Growers & Winemakers Association (SWGGA) is a community of grape growers, winemakers, and supporters of Sierra Foothill wine dedicated to sharing knowledge and strengthening the region’s winemaking tradition. We are a community united not by scale, but by passion. Our members – ranging from beginning home winemakers to experienced growers, some commercial, many not – all driven by curiosity and a desire to explore what’s possible. We are proud to have many award-winning winemakers among us.

The purpose of the Association is to advance interest in viticulture and viniculture in the northern Sierra Foothills. The Association shall pursue this goal by providing and promoting education opportunities, providing for information exchange, advocating viticulture interests with government bodies and the general public, promoting ecologically sound agriculture, supporting Sierra Foothills winemaking and providing a social venue for members where they can share experiences on an informal basis.

Founded in 1978, the Sierra Wine & Grape Growers Association began as a small group of dedicated growers committed to supporting one another through the unique challenges of viticulture in the Sierra Foothills. Over the years, SWGGA has grown into a respected regional leader, providing education, resources, outreach, and a community hub for winegrape growers and winemakers of all scales—from backyard hobbyists to commercial operations.
Our membership is open to anyone who owns a vineyard, makes wine, or is simply interested in becoming part of a vibrant, wine-focused community. Members continually expand their knowledge of viticultural and enological practices suited to Nevada County and the surrounding Placer, Yuba, and Sierra counties, working together to produce premium grapes and craft high-quality wines.
SWGGA meets monthly—usually on the third Thursday evening at the Nevada County Fairgrounds in Grass Valley. Each meeting features knowledgeable speakers or workshop panels covering topics in vineyard management, winemaking, and wine appreciation. Many gatherings begin or end with the sharing of members’ wines, fostering connection and collective learning.
Throughout the year, several meetings take place in the field, such as hands-on pruning demonstrations and vineyard or winery tours. The Annual General Meeting is held every November to elect officers and directors for the coming year. In addition, SWGGA hosts two major social events: a June summer picnic and a festive holiday party each December.
SWGGA proudly funds an annual scholarship for deserving Nevada County high school graduates pursuing higher education in agriculture or the sciences. Awards are based on financial need, academic performance, extracurricular involvement, and overall promise.
